Low Cost Car Insurance Premiums
Steve Poizner, California Insurance Commissioner, has devised a plan that would greatly help low income motorists as far as car insurance premiums are concerned. In Tulare County California alone, Poizner estimates that over 30,000 drivers are currently taking to the road each day without car insurance coverage. The main reason that they are breaking the law is because of the high price of insurance premiums.
Poizner has been in touch with the County of Tulare about adding it to the list of 16 other counties that currently offer a program that allows motorists to purchase low cost car insurance. This would be a huge step in getting all of the uninsured drivers up to par with the law.
In order to qualify for the discounted price a driver must be eligible under state income requirements. For those who do qualify, the program gives them the option to purchase liability coverage, which is required by the state, for around $400 a year.
At this time, approximately 15 percent of residents in Tulare County are driving without car insurance. This is a huge problem, and one that Poizner is looking to solve. If everything goes as planned, the program will be available to Tulare Country residents by the beginning of March 2007.
