Can you handle your Group Health Insurance being cancelled?
With a group health insurance you are never safe. No, this does not mean that you should be scared of cancellation at all times, but it is definitely something that you should have in the back of your mind. After all, you want to be prepared for anything bad that could happen. Most people who receive group health insurance think that they have no other means of obtaining coverage. But of course, this is not the case. If your coverage is cancelled you can and will make it through this tough time.
If your group health insurance coverage gets cancelled, the first step that you need to take is logical: find out where you can get another policy. Generally speaking, there are two options for doing this. Does your spouse's employer offer group health insurance that you can join? If so, this may be the best choice even if your spouse has to pay for you to join.
Your other option is to purchase an individual health insurance policy. This can cost a lot of money, and can be a big step in your life. But remember, it is better to pay for your own policy than to have nothing at all. There is no denying that transitioning from group health insurance to individual coverage can be tough; this can be particularly true from a financial perspective.
If you are lucky your group health insurance will never be cancelled. But unfortunately, some companies can no longer afford this benefit so they are doing away with it and letting employees fend for themselves. If you are thrown into this situation, consider your options and then do whatever you can to get coverage in place as soon as possible. Remember, you do not want to deal with a lapse in coverage no matter how short it is.
