Car Insurance and your Summer Trip

Before you leave on that cross country trip this summer, make sure that you take a close look at your car insurance policy. Most people pass this by because they are too preoccupied with checking their tire pressure, air conditioning, and other details on the car itself. But if you do not remember to carefully examine your car insurance policy you could end up regretting it in the end.

There are two circumstances that you could find yourself in while traveling on summer vacation via automobile. First off, you may be taking your own car. If this is the case, your car insurance policy is what will keep you covered. Make sure that you have enough coverage to keep you safe no matter what may happen on your trip. Additionally, your car insurance provider may offer extras such as road side assistance and rental car replacement. These are nice extras to have on a long trip because you never know what is going to happen.

On the other side of things, you may decide to rent a car to take on your trip. As you can imagine, if you buy insurance through the rental company your daily rate is going to increase by quite a bit. Luckily, you are probably already covered through your insurance company as well as your credit card if that is the method of payment you used. When you pay via credit card you will receive what is known as Collision Damage Waiver. This covers the cost of the rental car if damaged, vandalized, or stolen. But remember, in order for this type of coverage to be activated you need to decline what the rental car company is offering.

As you can see, you definitely need to consider your car insurance situation before taking off for your summer vacation.
