Coping with a Job Loss, Health Insurance

Losing your job can put you in a tough financial situation. Adding to this is the fact that you may also lose health insurance coverage at the same time. Luckily, there are some options, including extending your coverage through COBRA, that you can consider. Although this is a bad situation, it is not one that has to keep you down and out for too long.

The following are three tips that will allow you to better deal with a job loss accompanied by the loss of health insurance coverage:

  1. If possible, try to look ahead so that you can prepare. This is not always possible, but in some cases you may be able to see a lay-off coming at your company. In this situation, you will want to prepare as best as possible for the future. If nothing happens, at the very least you are more knowledgeable and in a better position should things change.
  2. There are many ways to receive health insurance coverage. In other words, getting a policy through your employer is not the only option. You can get on a spouse's plan if possible, or purchase an individual policy. Sure, it is nice to be covered on a group health insurance plan, but it is far from your only option.
  3. Never give in and live without health insurance coverage. If you are in the dumps about losing your job you may not feel like shopping for a new policy. Obviously, this is a mistake because you can get sick or injured at any time.

You should find these three tips useful if you have lost your job, or feel that this may be coming in the near future. It is not fun to search elsewhere for health insurance, but it sure beats not having coverage and living in fear.
