Disability Insurance Can Help You in Times of Need

You may have noticed that the cost of medical bills is getting higher everyday. Getting sick these days no longer means just spending your day in bed sipping chicken soup. Today's illnesses are much more complicated and dangerous if left untreated. Medication is the only way and medicines are costly. Now imagine yourself having some long term illness that requires the services of a caregiver. This will surely put a strain on your wallet and monthly budget.

Today, diseases have become more common and more dangerous. New generations of diseases have cropped up which are more virulent and immune to any medication. Some diseases will have debilitating effects and may even paralyze you. Having insurance policy can give you some comfort and assurance against these life threatening diseases. Long term care disability insurance is not only needed when you are sick, it will also be needed when you are unable to perform basic tasks due to an accident. Basic tasks include brushing, cleaning up, toileting, and other daily routines. Long term care insurance policies help cover or replace a portion of your income if you are unable to work due to long term sickness or accidents. There are basically two types of package benefits: Short-term and Long-term disability coverage.

Short-term disability coverage will give you protection from expensive medical bills during the first few days of your disability. The policy will cover your expenses and the coverage can last for as long as two years. This is usually the initial offering of any long term care insurance policy or it can be included in the medical benefits of your employer.

Long-term disability coverage will help you in replenishing your lost income due to your disability. As the name suggests, the long-term disability coverage will support you for an extended period of time—usually five years or at the age of 65, whichever comes first. This can also be included in the medical benefits of your employer or you can choose to avail of it individually. If you choose to avail individually, you can have two options. One option would be non-cancelable and the other would be guaranteed renewable.

Non-cancelable disability insurance policies is a type of insurance that requires the insured to renew the policy and pay the premiums at specified times. Guaranteed renewable disability insurance policies on the other hand, can be canceled by the policyholder. However one major difference between the two policies is that within non cancelable disability insurance policy, your premiums will never increase and will remain at the same rate as that shown on the policy. Guaranteed renewable policies have low initial premiums that they can raise their premiums if the change affects all policyholders.

There are different types of long-term care insurance policies. Different companies offer different benefits. It would be advisable if you review the policy first before deciding on availing of one. Get to know what benefits they have to offer. And always look for insurance companies that are reputable and are well known. This guarantees you that they will be able to pay you when you need it the most.
