Group Health Insurance: The Best or Worst Choice?

There used to be a time when everybody thought that group health insurance was the best way to get coverage. Is this still true? In some cases, yes. But at the same time, there are more people who are beginning to believe that group health insurance may not be the best choice. There is no right or wrong way of looking at group health insurance coverage. It all depends on your current situation, and what your employer is offering.

The good thing about group health insurance is that you can usually get great coverage at a discounted price. In many cases, employees receive free coverage. This is obviously a good thing because buying health insurance on your own can be a costly endeavor. Additionally, with group health insurance you usually don't have to worry about preexisting conditions or other stipulations that may hold you back. For many, this is a very big deal.

So what is bad about group health insurance? The most important thing to remember is that your company is in charge of your policy. They can change it when they want, charge you what they want, or get rid of the coverage altogether if they can no longer afford it. When you put your health insurance in the hands of somebody else, you are always taking a risk. That being said, most people agree that this is a risk worth taking.

How do you like your group health insurance? If you have never though about both the pros and cons, now may be the time to do so. There are benefits of joining a group health insurance policy, but at the same time there are some drawbacks and risks that you should also be aware of. This is not meant to scare you away from group health insurance, but to educate you on both sides of the story.
