Maryland Health Insurance Plan $600 Million in Upgrades
As you probably know, the United States is struggling big time when it comes to the health insurance industry. Not only are individuals dealing with rising costs, but there are more people than ever before who are living without any health insurance at all. Although changes need to be made on a national level, many states are deciding to take matters into their own hands until then. Most recently, Maryland has made huge strides in helping those who live in the state.
The Maryland Senate has approved a plan that will see the health insurance industry in the state receiving a total of $600 million over the next five years. As you can imagine, this will go a long way in changing things for the better.
The question is: what will this money go towards? Generally speaking, there are two areas that will benefit from these millions. First off, Medicaid eligibility is going to be expanded. This may not help members of the younger generation, but those who are at retirement age or older are sure to benefit from this plan.
Additionally, some small businesses will also benefit from this plan. Many of them will receive a government subsidy which will allow them to offer health insurance to employees. Since the cost of health insurance can greatly cut into the profits of small business, any help in this area will definitely go a long way.
Are you wondering where the money for these changes will come from? Well, the state of Maryland has gotten quite creative in this area. Although yet to be approved, the sources for the money will include tobacco tax as well as slot machine gambling. While there are sure to be those who oppose this method of raising money, it is safe to say that it will be quite successful.
Hopefully, more states will follow in the footsteps of Maryland in the near future.
