Homeowners Insurance Making a Claim
The main reason that consumers purchase homeowner's insurance is to protect them against theft, fire, natural disasters, and other damages. Fortunately, homeowner's insurance claims are rarely filed. But if you are presented with having to do so, the process can be a bit tricky.
The following tips should make it easier on you if you need to file a homeowner's insurance claim.
- Notify your homeowner's insurance of your loss immediately. This allows them to start the process right away, and in cases of smaller claims your agent can help you directly. When speaking with your agent make sure that you get detailed information from the adjuster who you will be working with.
- If you need emergency repairs, make sure to ask your agent for a list of approved companies. In many cases, a company can do repairs on an emergency basis and then bill your homeowner's insurance direct.
- Each time that you speak with your homeowner's insurance company you should document the conversation. Get the names of the people you are speaking with, and include details on what was said.
- Document any damage to your property in great detail. This may mean writing down what happened, using a voice recorder, or even taking photos and videos. Anything that you can give to the adjuster will make things easier on your. Of course, witnesses and police reports are also important, if applicable.
- Make sure that you are on site when the insurance adjuster is inspecting your property. This way you can help them with anything that they may miss; and yes, this does happen!
- Never agree to your homeowner's insurance company's settlement unless you think that it is fair. If necessary, get a second opinion from a contractor. And it goes without saying, if you think that your homeowner's insurance company is trying to scam you, contact your state Department of Insurance.
