Townhouse Insurance FAQ
If you own a townhouse you will need to have the proper type of insurance. Although your townhouse community may carry a master policy, you still need to protect the belongings inside your home.
Even though townhouse insurance is similar to condo insurance, it differs in a few ways. Generally speaking, when you own a townhouse you need to insure not only your property but also the lot as well.
What is covered by your townhouse association master policy?
First off, make sure that the association has a master policy. If they do not offer any coverage, you may need to opt for a singly family homeowner's insurance policy.
Is water damaged protected?
There are some townhouse insurance policies that cover against damage by water, such as if sewers back up, and others that do not. Check to make sure if this is included in your policy.
Is personal property coverage necessary?
Most townhouse insurance policies will cover your personal property for up to approximately $2,500. Of course, if you have expensive items in your home such as jewelry or antiques you may want to buy additional coverage.
Do I qualify for any discounts?
If you have ever shopped for townhouse insurance you are aware that it can be expensive. Luckily, you may be able to lessen this cost by raising your deductible, installing safety devices, etc. Also, look into insuring your townhouse with the same company that provides the association with their master policy.
