Life Insurance > What to do when your Term Life Policy Runs out

What to do when your Term Life Policy Runs out

Purchasing term life insurance is very common because it is more affordable than a whole life policy. With that in mind, a term life policy will run out after a given amount of years. This is in contrast to whole life insurance that continues as long as you make your premium payment. The question is: what are you going to do when your term life insurance policy runs out? You need to have a plan so that you never have a lapse in coverage.

Your options for moving forward after your term policy runs out are plentiful. First off, you may want to consider purchasing another term policy. If you are going to do this, keep in mind that the cost is sure to be more as you get older. Many people forget this, and are surprised that they are charged more when they are 40 than when they were 30 years of age.

On the other side of things, you may not want to buy anything after your term life insurance policy runs out. One of the nicest things about this type of policy is that you can have it in place until your children reach a certain age. Once they are 18 and on their own, you may feel that you no longer need life insurance. This is a decision that you need to make, but one that fits in nicely if you are interested in purchasing term life insurance.

As long as you know that term life insurance does not last forever, you should be just fine. Just remember, it is always nice to have a plan for when your policy expires. Your plan may change several times, and this is okay. Just make sure that if you want coverage that you always have it. Any lapse between your term policy expiring and buying a new policy can be risky.
