What to look for when buying Health and Dental Insurance

Health and dental insurance protect you and provide payment of benefits for injuries or illness that is covered by your plan. Within health and dental insurance, there are many types of insurance including medical expense insurance, disability income insurance, accident insurance, dismemberment insurance, and accidental death insurance among others.

Before you sign a contract for health and dental insurance make sure that you have read the entire benefit's section. You will want to take note of anything that is not covered, and of course, what is covered as well. Also, make sure that there is no verbiage that may come back to haunt you. Often times health insurance companies will hide exclusions by playing with the meaning of the words.

For example, a health and dental insurance company may define "emergency' as anything that is threatening to your life and cannot be treated by a primary care doctor. But on the other side of things, you may have a different meaning for the word "emergency.' These are all things that you need to clear up before signing a contract.

Here are some words that you should pay close attention to when reading over your health and dental insurance policy: accidental injury, experimental or investigational, medical emergency, medically necessary, pre certification, preexisting condition, and reasonable and customary. This is not to say that these words are a bad thing, but they should send up a red flag until you look into them further.

Lastly, find the section that describes how you will get reimbursed by your health and dental insurance company for coverage. Again, read through these terms and conditions, and then ask any questions before you make a final decision.

Once you have checked over the policy you will then have a better idea of if you want to buy or not. As long as you take your time, you will end up with health and dental insurance that is right for you.
