Your Health Insurance Deductible

When buying an individual health insurance policy, make sure that you know what type of deductible your policy calls for. Believe it or not, a lot of people purchase health insurance without ever really knowing what a deductible is. Simply put, this is the amount of money that you will have to pay before your health insurance company begins to kick in their money. Obviously, you will want to have a lower deductible so that you are responsible for a less amount of money.

As you are shopping for health insurance you will notice that there are several different levels of deductibles. You will find policies with deductibles as low as $500 or as high as $3,000 or more. Remember, the lower deductible policies will carry a higher premium. So even though it would be nice to buy one of these policies, you need to make sure that you are capable of paying for it.

If you are on a budget, your best bet would be to find the lowest deductible plan for the lowest cost. Since there are quite a few health insurance companies that sell individual policies, you should have the ability to compare many options. This is especially true if you shop online.

All in all, the deductible portion of a health insurance policy is something that you need to take seriously when shopping. If you overlook this detail, you may end up paying more money out of your pocket than you ever thought possible.
