Your Life Insurance Beneficiary
When you buy a life insurance policy one of the most important decisions is naming your beneficiary. This is the person who will receive the benefits of your policy when you pass on. It is a shame to think that many people do not take this selection process seriously.
In many ways, choosing your beneficiary is the most important part of buying a life insurance policy. If you do this wrong, you could be setting up a huge problem for many people when you die.
First things first, you should never name your "estate' as your beneficiary. If you do this, creditors have every right to come after the money. The purpose of life insurance is to make sure your spouse or children are taken care of; not for creditors to take the money to pay off debt.
You will want to be very specific when naming your beneficiary. In other words, do not use vague terms such as children or wife/husband. Instead, you want to use exact names so that there is no confusion along the way. This is not only helpful when you die, but also when you are living as well.
Remember, you will also have the chance to name secondary beneficiaries on your life insurance policy. They would receive the benefits should the primary beneficiary die before the policy holder.
As you can see, choosing a beneficiary on your life insurance policy is not something that you should take lightly. This is a very important decision, and one that you must treat with care. Although you will probably be mostly concerned with your level of coverage, unless you specify a beneficiary with care, this may end up being a moot point in the end.
